Hi! My name is Gale Whitehurst. I live in Thomasville, Georgia, where I am a
professor of History at
Thomas
University. I have taught at the university
for 32 years. I enjoy working with young people who are trying to prepare
themselves for the future. This has been very rewarding, and the university is
like my second child. Even if I won the lottery, I would not stop teaching,
although I would choose not to work at 8 am!
The beautiful, young lady in the picture with me is my
daughter, Ashley. She graduated with her Masters of Science degree in
Communication Disorders and is now employed as a speech language pathologist,
i.e. speech therapist, in Illinois. She married a wonderful young man, Fernando
Lanatta, in May of 2004. In May of 2005, they gave me my first grandchild,
Drake Jackson - named after his great grandfather; and in October of 2007, they
added my granddaughter, Monica Lynette - named after her great grandmother - to
the family. I'm still hoping they will come to their senses and move back
south (out of the deep freeze)!
My hobbies include sports, bridge, and computer games. The
sports in particular that I enjoy are football and baseball. I am a die-hard
Thomas University, Florida State University, and
Atlanta Braves fan. For such a small, private
university, Thomas has some great athletic teams, and our teams are always
regional contenders. In 2005, Thomas University's softball team was the NAIA
National Champions!
While Ashley and family and Thomas University are the
treasures of my life, the activities that bring me the greatest enjoyment and
satisfaction are my basenjis. Since Ashley was an only child, when she was
eleven, I decided that I needed something to keep me from becoming the
worry-wart mother of an active teenager and experiencing the "empty-nest
syndrome" when she left for college. My life-long love of dogs led me to the
breed known as Basenjis. They have certainly filled this niche better than I
ever imagined.
